Dr. Lavkulich is Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia, and is Director of the Global Resources Systems and Master of Land and Water Systems programs. His research focuses on the application of science to human welfare and policy development. Major research foci include characterization, properties and genesis of soils; mineral weathering and surface characterization; heavy (trace) metal dynamics; mine reclamation; water resource management; soil and environmental chemistry; biogeochemistry; adaptive management; carbon dynamics; bridging natural science and policy; and the communication of science.
